Middle School U.S. History Apps

HISTORY Here

A free app that lets students enter a location or use their current location to find what historical events took place in the location they choose. Once they choose a location a map will appear with a 100-mile radius from the location & it also shows historical sites located in that radius. Students can touch the pinpoints to get the name of the site & a short blurb about why it is famous. The app comes from the History Channel.

Presidents vs. Aliens

From the makers of Stack the States, Presidents vs. Aliens makes learning about the presidents fun! Have students learn facts, quotes, nicknames, & events about different presidents to defeat the aliens. A great way to quiz students on their knowledge of U.S. history by setting up multiple players to keep track of their progress.

Students answer the questions correctly & to earn presidents' portrait to fling at the aliens to knock them down. If questions are answered incorrectly, the game gives them the correct answer. The game will keep giving them questions until all the aliens are knocked out, & students have to answer at least 50% of the questions correct to win the level & add presidents to their collections. Questions are asked of even the lesser known presidents. You can check off which types of questions are asked for each player. Some of type of questions asked are,

  • Identify President (ex: Which of these presidents is William Howard Taft?)
  • Political Party (ex: Which president held office as a member of the Whig party?)
  • Before & After (ex: Which president preceded James Monroe?)
  • Historical Events (ex: Who was presidents during the end of the Korean War?)
  • Nicknames (ex: Which president has the nickname "Honest Abe?")
  • Quotes (ex: Who said this? "Take time to deliberate; but when the time for action arrives, stop thinking & go in.")
  • Facts (ex: Which president ran a peanut farm?)

Only 6 presidents can be collected with the free version. With the paid version, once 15 presidents are collected there is a bonus game Head of State, which asks students to choose the correct portrait for the president's name. After 30 presidents are collected, Executive Order bonus game is unlocked. This game asks the students to place the presidents in order of their term in office. Flashcards are also provided about all 44 presidential terms & the 43 men who served as presidents (Grover Cleveland served as 22nd & 24th president in two non-consecutive terms) to brush up on presidential knowledge with the paid version. This game combines Angry Birds style with American history to create a game that students will want to play & learn. (free/$0.99)
